Yes for paddock sheets, show rugs, coolers, fleece rugs and stable rugs. Not advisable for waterproof turnout rugs: stitching perforates the waterproof membrane and the rug will leak at the needle holes. If you want a mark on turnout, use an applied badge, a sewn-on panel at a seam, or accept the loss of waterproofing in that area. Anyone who agrees to embroider a turnout rug without mentioning this has not thought about it.
Rugs and sheets are the most visible embroidery a yard or stud will ever commission. They are also the place where the fabric matters more than anywhere else on the order.
Key takeaways
- Paddock sheets, coolers, fleeces, show rugs and stable rugs all embroider well
- Waterproof turnout rugs should not be embroidered through the outer shell
- Every needle hole is a hole in the waterproof membrane
- Rear corner is the standard placement, because that is where a camera finds it
- Larger pieces allow more detail than a chest panel — use it
- Expect from around £60 depending on weight, trim and fabric
Which rugs can be embroidered?
| Type | Embroiders? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Paddock sheet | Yes | The classic. Wool or technical, takes a crest beautifully |
| Show rug | Yes | Designed to be looked at, so worth the detail |
| Cooler / fleece | Yes | Stable fabric, no membrane, forgiving |
| Stable rug | Yes | Quilted outers take stitching well |
| Waterproof turnout | Not through the shell | Perforating the membrane causes leaks |
| Exercise sheet | Usually | Depends whether it is waterproofed |
Why waterproof turnout is the exception
A waterproof rug works because its outer shell carries a membrane or coating that water cannot pass. Embroidery drives a needle through that shell several thousand times. Every one of those holes is a route for water, and no amount of taping afterwards fully restores it.
You will find suppliers who will do it anyway, and the rug will look excellent for one winter. The owner will then report that it leaks across the shoulders and will not connect the two things.
The alternatives are straightforward: embroider a separate panel and have it sewn on at an existing seam, use an applied badge, or put the mark on the rug's binding rather than its body. Any of those keeps the shell intact.
Where should the mark go?
Standard placements
- Rear corner — the default, and where a camera finds it when the horse is walking away
- Both rear corners — for anything that will be photographed from either side
- Hip — higher visibility in a parade ring, less so in a photograph
- Neck or chest strap — small marks only
Rugs are large, which means you can use more detail than a chest panel allows. A stud crest that has to be simplified for a cap front can usually run in full on a paddock sheet. It is worth having both versions drawn at the same time rather than discovering the problem later — see how to get racing colours embroidered on kit.
What does it cost?
From around £60 for a paddock sheet, rising with weight, trim and how complex the mark is. Coolers and fleeces sit at the lower end, heavyweight wool show rugs at the higher.
Drawing the mark is separate and one-off. Once it exists, every rug, sheet and garment afterwards uses the same file.
Rowley & Bowes makes paddock sheets, rugs and saddlecloths for yards and studs around Newmarket. If you ask us to embroider a waterproof turnout rug, we will tell you why we would rather not, and what we would do instead.

Can you embroider a waterproof turnout rug?
Technically yes, but it is not advisable. Embroidery perforates the waterproof membrane thousands of times, and each needle hole is a route for water. The rug will leak in that area, usually within a season. Better options are an embroidered panel sewn on at an existing seam, an applied badge, or placing the mark on the binding rather than the body.
Where is embroidery usually placed on a horse rug?
The rear corner is standard, because that is where a camera catches it as the horse walks away and where it is visible in a parade ring. Both rear corners is common for anything photographed from either side. The hip works for in-person visibility, and neck or chest straps suit small marks only.
How much does it cost to embroider a paddock sheet?
From around £60, rising with the weight of the fabric, the trim and the complexity of the mark. Lightweight coolers and fleeces are at the lower end, heavyweight wool show rugs higher. Drawing the mark itself is a separate one-off cost, after which every rug, sheet and garment reuses the same file.
Can a rug carry more detail than a jacket?
Yes. Rugs and sheets give far more area than a chest panel, so a crest that must be simplified for a cap front can often run in full on a paddock sheet. It is worth having both versions drawn at the same time, so the detailed one is ready for horse kit and the simplified one for clothing.
